Divorce and the impact on your mental health

Posted on 27 November, 2017 at 5:25

Divorce nowadays appears to be a common occurrence. A divorce can present with many implications for everyone involved, such as the couple and where present, the children and also the wider family. The effects of a divorce can have an impact not only on everyone’s physical health, but also on a psychological level. It is well documented in literature that there is a link with anxiety and depression as well as a high risk of abusing alcohol. There is evidence that during and after the divorce period women and men are at risk of experience a range of mental health issues.

Reference: Svedin, CG; Wadsby, M 1998 :The presence of psychiatric consultations in relation to divorce Acta Psychiatr Scand, Nov; 98 (5): 414-422

A recognised way in which to help cope with the impact of divorce is to talk about it to someone with a “sympathetic ear”, someone who understands what you are experiencing and someone who will not judge you for struggling to cope. Bottling up worries and challenges during a difficult time such as a divorce, can lead to them growing into worse anxieties and potential depression. Talking to the right person about your troubles can help you manage your anxieties and low mood, which will help you to cope as you move forward. Even if the divorce has been your choice, it can still be a confusing and emotional time.

MTS Psychotherapy can help you and to see the way forward. MTS Psychotherapy is headed by Manuela Surgeon, a fully qualified psychotherapist and who will listen and work with you during confidential meetings, help you to manage the impact of a divorce and develop a plan to help you cope. In time this will allow you to regain control of your life, which can lead to an improvement on quality of life and your mental well-being.

With clinics in 2 different venues in Flint, North Wales and Telford, Shropshire, MTS Psychotherapy can help people from North Wales, Wirral, Chester, Cheshire, Shropshire and the North West. With extensive experience and training, Manuela specialises in Stress, Relationship problems, Anxiety, Depression, Trauma in early and later years and Self-Esteem conditions. I Can't Cope with Getting Through the Next Hour, Day or Night

Posted on 20 June, 2017 at 8:35

We all face difficulties in life. Today’s pressures are mounting and are relentless. Life events often take over such as illness, grieving, relationships, money, housing or a whole host of other influences that affect our lives. Different people cope in different ways and manage the daily pressures in their own way, but we all have our own levels of coping.

For those less able to cope, these daily pressures can mount and become a huge barrier to being able to move forward. Sometimes coping with the next hour, day or getting through the night can be a massive challenge and disrupt the person’s life, adding to the stress on the coping system and creating further upset.

A recognised way in which to help cope with these “life pressures” is to talk about them to someone with a “sympathetic ear”, someone who understands what you are experiencing and someone who will not judge you for struggling to cope. Bottling up worries and challenges can lead to them growing into worse anxieties and worries. Talking to the right person about your troubles can help you understand your fears and help build a fresh perspective that will help you to cope as you move forward.

MTS Psychotherapy can help you to see the way forward and is headed by Manuela Surgeon, a fully qualified psychotherapist. She can help people who maybe experiencing pressures that are having a negative impact on their lives at home and/or in the workplace.

Manuela will listen and work with you, help you to understand the factors that are having a negative impact on your life and develop a plan to help you cope and manage these external, stressful influences that are affecting your ability to cope with getting through the immediate moment, the next hour, day or through the night.

With clinics in 3 three different venues in Wirral, Telford and Flintshire, MTS Psychotherapy help people from Merseyside, Cheshire, Shropshire, North Wales and the North West. For those people who may not be able to visit any of the clinics, Manuela can offer support through the workplace, via telephone or Skype, allowing you to talk about your own personal challenges.

Get in touch with Manuela, it’s good to talk and she has that “sympathetic, understanding ear” that can help.

Mental Health Awareness with MTS Psychotherapy

Posted on 8 May, 2017 at 5:40

What is your Mental Health like? Everybody has Mental Health, recognising at what stage your Mental Health is and of those around you is the start of Mental Health Awareness. For those of us with good Mental Health, our lives are in good order, we feel positive about life, are able to think, feel and act in a more positive way and can deal with life’s challenges in an orderly fashion. For those of us whose Mental Health is not as good, we have less positivity, struggle to think, act and feel positive about life, we struggle to cope with life’s stresses and strains and can begin to seriously affect our whole lifestyle. Mental Health awareness with MTS Psychotherapy can help identify the issues that affect us and by working together can develop a positive pathway to be able to cope with those daily pressures and lead to an increased quality of life.

Many factors can contribute to Mental Health problems and can lead to altering the way you think, your mood and can affect your behaviour. It is important to be aware of your own Mental Health, but also that of those close to you including family, friends and colleagues. Some of the indicators that could point to Mental Health problems are:

• Erratic sleep behaviour

• Gradual isolation from friends and family

• Low energy levels

• Unexplained aches and pains

• Feelings of helplessness, hopelessness and a feeling that nothing matters

• Arguing with family and friends

• Mood swings

• Inability to carry out daily duties such as work and homelife

In March 2017, the Mental Health Foundation commissioned a report, Surviving or Thriving, the state of the UK’s mental health. The aim of the report, released in time for Mental Health Awareness Week Week 8-14 May 2017, was to understand the level of self-reported Mental Health problems, the populations level of Mental Health and the actions taken to reduce the influencing factors in people’s lives.

The report concluded:

1. “Current levels of good mental health are disturbingly low. The barometer of success of any nation is the health and wellbeing of its people. We have a long way to go before we can say that we are a thriving nation. Although we have made great strides in the health of our bodies and our life expectancy, we now need to achieve the same for the good health of our minds.

2. The survey suggests that our collective mental health is deteriorating. Overall most of us report experiencing a mental health problem in our lifetime. However, young adults report this at a higher level, despite having had fewer years in their lives to experience this. While there may be an element which reflects a greater ease at acknowledging a mental health problem, nevertheless this suggests a real and emerging problem. It is possible that it is linked to greater insecurities in life expectations for work, relationships and homes. The reasons and solutions warrant investigation.

3. The figures show that the experience of poor mental health, while touching every age and demographic, is not evenly distributed. If you are female, a young adult, on low income, living alone or in a large household, your risks of facing mental ill health are higher.”
